Latah Creek Riesling 2016

Latah Creek Riesling 2016

BACKGROUND

During Latah Creek’s thirty-four years of producing Riesling, Mike has had the opportunity to use grapes from nearly every growing region within Washington State: Pasco/Tri-Cities, Sunnyside, Yakima Valley, Wahluke Slope, Rattlesnake Hills, and most recently the Ancient Lakes AVA. Of all these areas, father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, believe the Ancient Lakes AVA consistently produces the best Riesling, thus a conversion was made to this area for all Riesling bottling’s since their first harvest there in the early 1990’s.

WINEMAKING

The 2016 vintage was back to a normal-ish harvest date. This made for fruit that was so full of flavor. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cooler temperatures, to retain its forward fruit characteristics. A higher acid level was left in the wine to keep it from cloying, and to keep it fresh and crisp.

TASTING NOTES

The intensely aromatic wine begins with aroma of green apple, honey, and candied lemon. At first sip, you are graced with nuances of poached apple, floral, and sweet honey. Ripe pear and honeysuckle continue to linger with a crisp finish.

FOOD PAIRING

Enjoy this wine with salads, light desserts, pork, and chicken, such as Ellena’s Pork Chops with Apples and Shallots recipe published in her latest cookbook.

This historic Spokane winery relies on fruit from the relatively cool Ancient Lakes area of the Columbia Valley — a region quickly gaining renown for producing some of Washington’s best white grapes. This clean, crisp wine shows off aromas of lime zest and orange oil. On the palate, the purity of fruit veritably shouts “This is Riesling!” as it gives way to flavors of apple, pear and honeydew melon. Energetic acidity provides remarkable backbone through the lengthy finish
