After a visit to Italy, Mike and Ellena came home in love with Chiantis. The light, everyday-style of this wine appealed to them because of its easy drinking and versatile food pairing. Upon returning home, Mike was able to find Sangiovese grapes (the main grape in Italian Chiantis) in the Wahluke Slope AVA, one of his favorite red wine growing regions. This wine quickly became not only a staff favorite and an Ellena favorite, but a customer favorite as well. This is why it was so devastating when Latah Creek’s vines were destroyed with a deep freeze in 2010. Over 10 years later, one of Natalie’s grape growers called with an opportunity. They had an excess in the fields, but the grapes were originally harvested for a Rosé. Mike and Natalie were pleasantly surprised by the abundant fruitiness and saw the potential for a delightful everyday red wine. The lower sugar, higher acid levels, and lower tannins resulted in a lighter style Sangiovese, brimming with vibrant berry notes. It is a perfect choice for those seeking a fresh and fruity, yet dry, red wine for casual enjoyment.
