Father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, love their red wine repertoire, but they also love adding new wines into the mix. Such was the case with Malbec. This increasingly popular variety grows exceptionally well here in the environs of Washington State and produces a wonderful full-bodied red reminiscent of its French origin. The first two vintages, 2011 and 2012 were so well-loved that this varietal is a now a staple on their list. This 2020 Malbec comes from a picture perfect vineyard, near Wahluke Slope, but not quite on the slope. Mike and Natalie have used fruit from these vineyards since the mid-90’s, and are never disappointed with the fruit flavor. Because of this, very little input from the winemaker is needed – the wine almost makes itself.
My dad and I both have a fondness for the Malbec varietal because of its reliably fruit-forward character. As you take a sip, you’re welcomed by enticing aromas of ripe plum, raspberry, and cocoa. The initial flavors of black plum and oak vanillin burst onto your palate, followed by lingering notes of minty tobacco, dark cherry, and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel.
Enjoy this wine with meats, game, and robust, herb-centric meals such as Ellena’s Baguette Baked Tenderloin recipe available online or in her latest cookbook.
