Latah Creek Sangria no.9

9 years ago, Natalie created something different than she had ever done before.  She had some extra huckleberry juice left over from their Huckleberry d’latah, and instead of storing it for a whole year until our next vintage, she decided to experiment. This is one of her favorite aspects of winemaking: blending and tinkering to discover new creations or perhaps something even better. As summer began, Sangria started to sound particularly appealing. Her mom has a go-to recipe that features a red wine base, so she thought of blending the extra juice with their oak-aged 2010 Reserve Syrah. The result was a wonderfully refreshing Sangria that wasn’t overly sweet—exactly what she had envisioned. Apparently, others felt the same, as the initial batch of 70 cases sold out in just three weeks!  Now, they produce about 200 cases each year, releasing it during our Spring Release Weekend event, and it usually sells out by the end of September.

Natalie’s Tasting Notes

This wine is my baby. When I first set out to create it, my dad insisted that if I wanted to bottle it, I had to take care of everything—design the labels, order the corks and bottles, organize the team, and more. I managed to complete all the tasks just in time for our 33rd Anniversary Celebration. Each spring, we whip up a new batch, during which I taste all the red wines available to blend with our huckleberry juice and concentrate, searching for the perfect combination for that year’s vintage. No. 9 is crafted with our Mike’s Reserve Red No. 4 as the base wine, resulting in a bold, rich, and deep red that harmonizes beautifully with the tart berry flavors from the juices. Experience the vibrant berry notes accompanied by a subtle hint of oak vanillin that lingers long after the wine is enjoyed. This Sangria should be served well chilled.

Food Pairing

Since this wine has such a hearty base red, it will pair with anything that has some spice, such as Ellena’s Speedy Kebobs recipe available online and in her latest cookbook.  Ellena also suggests pouring the wine into a pitcher and add frozen berries to keep the wine chilled without watering it down.  Then, when all of the wine is consumed, the berries and place on top of pound cake with a dollop of whip cream for a delicious Berry Shortcake.
